CLASSIFICATION OF ROADS 

The roads are classified as under :

(a) Depending on use during different seasons : 

The roads are classified into two categories depending on whether they can be used during different seasons of the year.

1) All – weather roads :

All weather roads are those which can be used during all weather, except at major

river crossings where interruption to traffic is permissible up to a certain extent, the road pavement should be negotiable during all weathers. 

2) Fair weather roads :

Fair weather roads are those on which the traffic may be interrupted during monsoon season at causeways where streams may overflow across the road. 

(b) Based on the type of the carriage way :

Based on the type of the carriage way or the road pavement, the roads are classified as: 

1) Paved roads :

If they are provided with a hard pavement course which should be atleast a Water Bound Macadam (WBM) layer.

e.g. WBM road, premix carpet road, cement concrete road, etc.

2) Unpaved roads : 

If they are not provided with a hard pavement course of atleast a WBM layer. 

e.g. Earth roads, Gravel roads.

(c) Based on the type of pavement surface:

Based on the type of pavement surface provided, the roads are classified as : 

1) Surface roads :

Surface roads are those which are provided with a bituminous or cement concrete surfacing.

2) Unsurfaced roads :

Unsurfaced roads are those which are not provided with bituminous or cement concrete surfacing.
